At our gender reveal, we cut the cake, and it was black – my MIL stood aside, crying

After two years of trying, countless doctor’s visits, and emotional struggles, they were finally expecting

This celebration marked the beginning of their long-awaited happiness, shared with friends and family

“We made it,” Jerry whispered, hugging Misha. “This is the beginning of forever.”

On the big day, the house was filled with pink and blue decorations, and family members gathered in excitement. Nancy arrived dressed entirely in black—a strange choice, but no one questioned it. Cameras were ready, and everyone counted down with anticipation.

“Three… two… one!”

Confused, Misha glanced around and noticed Nancy standing aside, tears streaming down her face.

“Nancy, what’s happening?” Misha asked, trying to stay calm.

Nancy hesitated, visibly distressed. “I’m so sorry… I didn’t know what else to do…”

“Mom, why is the cake black?” Jerry asked, baffled.

Nancy took a shaky breath. “Ten years ago, I visited a fortune teller with my sister. She warned me that if my first grandchild was a boy, it would bring illness to me and ruin your life, Jerry.”

The room gasped. Jerry stared, shocked

“Mom, you believed that for ten years?”

Nancy nodded, visibly tormented. “She was known for being right. I thought if I made the cake black, it might stop the curse. I even baked bay leaves in it, hoping to alter fate.”

Misha closed her eyes, trying to process. “So… you let a superstition ruin our reveal?”

Just then, Jerry’s cousin Megan spoke up, looking at her phone. “Wait, was the fortune teller named J. Morris?”

Nancy perked up. “Yes, that’s her!”

Megan held up an article. “She was exposed as a fraud years ago. She preyed on people’s fears to make money.”

Nancy’s face fell. “All this time… I was afraid for nothing.”

Jerry, frustrated, sighed. “Mom, this ruined an important moment.”

Nancy cried softly, “I’m so sorry. I never meant to spoil your day.”

Seeing Nancy so distressed, Misha softened. She gently placed a hand on Nancy’s. “It’s okay, Mom. Now we know, and we can enjoy this pregnancy together without fear.”

Nancy looked up with gratitude. “Thank you, Misha. I’m so sorry.”

Jerry laughed a bit, “So… does this mean we’re having a boy?”

The room erupted in laughter, and even Nancy managed a small smile. Megan snapped a picture of the cake, joking, “This is definitely going on Instagram—#GothBabyReveal.”

Everyone enjoyed a slice of the black cake, laughing about the most unusual gender reveal they’d ever experienced.

It wasn’t the reveal Misha and Jerry had expected, but surrounded by love, laughter, and family, it still felt perfect.
